Take two: What exactly is vision?

In a previous post, I shared the definition of vision from Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies.

This time, I’d like to share the definition from Full Steam Ahead: Unleash the Power of Vision in Your Work and Your Life.

The three key elements of a compelling vision: Significant Purpose, Clear Values, A Picture of the Future.

On the definition of purpose:

By purpose, I mean understand what we are here for, why we exist. It means understanding what business we are really in so that we all can focus our efforts in support of that purpose.

On why the word purpose is preferred over mission:

Good mission statements include a clear statement of purpose. Unfortunately, the term mission is so overused and has so many different meanings that it’s become confusing. I find it simpler to use the term purpose.

As I mentioned in the previous post, I am working on a book - How to Craft an Inspiring Purpose Statement: A Step-by-step Guide for Entrepreneurs. (It’s free for a limited time.) If you need to articulate your purpose or want to upgrade your existing purpose statement, I think you’ll find it helpful.
